Pat Parker Legacy – Round Two

The BCPS are delighted to be able to offer a grant to our members, in memory of Pat Parker, to enable them to further their equestrian knowledge and expand their experience in all things horse related. The criteria for this grant are wide-ranging, however the project must benefit the Connemara pony and/or members of the BCPS in some way. If you have an idea or project that needs a bit of a financial leg-up then please apply. Applicants must be 16 years or over to apply but there is no upper age limit as Pat would tell you that ‘You are never too old to learn something’. Please contact the secretary Geth at secretary(at)britishconnemaras.co.uk for the application form and more information about this grant can be found on the BCPS website. The closing date for this round of applications is 30th November 2021.

We have received this lovely report from Jessica Harvey – the first recipient of a grant from the Pat Parker Legacy.

“Pat Parker Legacy – JH Leather Bridle Making Course

Background

The BCPS kindly awarded me a grant to further my education in leather work, a craft I have been wanting to learn for a long time. I have battled with finding a bridle that perfectly fits my Connemara Ponies head, often mixing and matching brands, and sizes. My aim is to create a bridle that fits anatomically and suits the Connemara head.

To extend my knowledge and the learning of a new skill is such a wonderful opportunity and I am so grateful for the BCPS for their help and support and especially to Pat Parker, who I owe this fantastic experience all to.

Who am I training with?

I am training with the lovely Jo at JH Leather. Jo has worked in the leathercraft industry for over 13 years and it’s a fantastic opportunity to learn from someone with such a wealth of experience. Jo has been a member of the prestigious Society of Master Saddlers since 2013, giving me peace of mind that I am in the hands of a true master.

Where is the course?

Llanfyllin Workhouse in Llanfyllin, Wales.

What have I completed so far?

A bridle! Yes, an entire bridle… from leather selection through to sewing and finishing, Jo managed to fast track me to create a beautiful traditional bridle.

I still need to complete the reins and learn how to cut a mono crown headpiece (anatomical), so I will head back to Llanfyllin in the new year to continue my course. I can’t wait!

What has been the biggest challenge?

Trying not to stab myself with the needle! Getting the needle to pass through multiple layers of leather requires strength and dexterity, something I hope to improve on with practise.”
